Background: In 2000, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension administrated a Community Health survey through predominately African American churches in Clark County, Nevada. This was the first step in developing a community action plan to address cardiovascular disease in African Americans. The survey revealed that the first preference for health related information was health professionals and most received information from this source. The third preference for health information was the church; however the church ranked fifth as an actual source of information. Research has shown that African Americans do not seek health advice early and frequently do not follow recommendations. This may be related to communication and trust issues between African American patients and health care professionals. Method: During the summer of 2003, sessions were planned at local churches to give members an opportunity to have discussions with the medical community. Seven physicians, two nurses and one physician’s assistant participated. Results: Twelve, two hour sessions were held at 12 churches, 307 attended. Most health professionals focused on cardiovascular disease, risk factors, and communication with health care providers. Based on the evaluation of the sessions by attendees the information presented was useful and would be incorporated into their life style; they would also share the information. Suggestions were given for other sessions and it was stressed that the sessions be repeated. Conclusion: This was an opportunity to build comfort and trust between the community and health professionals. The church is an excellent setting for this type of session.
