Employment transitions for clubhouse members

This paper explores whether individuals move between employment supports, Transitional (TE), Supported (SE), and Independent Employment (IE), offered by clubhouses.

Currently over 300 clubhouses in 28 countries are recognized by the International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD). Clubhouses offer a wide range of services including education, housing, outreach, advocacy efforts, assistance with accessing health care, mental health care, substance abuse services, and social supports in addition to employment and vocational supports.

Despite the maturity and dissemination of the model, few studies have examined the utilization of clubhouse employment services or the extent of transitions between TE, SE, and IE (Bilby, 1992; Macias, Kinney, & Rodican, 1995; MCC, 2000; McKay et al., 2003). This paper involves developing a clearer understanding of the ways in which people utilize these three types employment using transition tables (Holland & DiPonzio-Copenhaver, 1988).

Between July 1998 and June 2002, 2195 individuals worked in 3379 separate job placements, employed in TE, SE, and IE. Sixty-four percent of employed members held one job (N=1395) and 36% held multiple jobs during the study (N=791).

Clubhouse members utilized and moved between all three types of employment (TE, SE, and IE) in both directions. Patterns of movement were consistent between the transition between job1 and job2 and multiple transitions. Forty-six percent of individuals holding multiple jobs moved from one employment type to another. When movement occurs members are more likely to move from employment types that offer more supports to those that offer less supports.
