Tobacco use prevention and control at the state and local level is a crucial effort in curbing our nation’s leading cause of death, particularly in a time of diminished Federal activity in tobacco control. Public-private partnerships must be created, maintained, and expanded to broaden support for the issue, since many tobacco control funding sources that have been previously available are being reduced. The presentation will review a model of enhancing community capacity used by the Louisiana Public Health Institute that accomplishes several goals needed to sustain successful partnerships in tobacco control: -initiate a community needs assessment, identifying strengths and gaps/needs -convene community-based organizations and key individuals identified by the needs assessment to discuss issues in common, setting out a preliminary strategy to tackle issues -pool resources and identify potential sources of support for projects -identify communications vehicles -bring new faces and constituents to the table -create action on tobacco control policy, education, and training
