Sahily De Castro, MHSA1, C. Gerry Mills, PhD2, Nazmi Sari, PhD1, and Frederick L. Newman, PhD1. (1) Health Policy & Management -- Robert R. Stempel School of Public Health, Florida International University, 11200 S.W. 8th Street, University Park PCA 367B, Miami, FL 33199, 305-348-0426, newmanf@fiu.edu, (2) Stetson School of Business and Economics, Mercer University, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341

As suicide continues to escalate in our society, the associated costs are also on the rise. The calculated direct cost of suicide deaths per youth in Florida is $18,859.17. The direct and indirect costs of suicide deaths, including monetary estimates for hospital, autopsy, funeral and ambulance services, and indirect cost of total annual earning lost of youth come to an estimate total costs of $674,782.67 per youth in 2002 dollars. The presentation will focus on the methods for using the results of a meta analysis on prevention programs to obtain an odds ratio of prevention program “success” and the total costs per youth in the estimation of the cost benefit for each program. The resulting benefit cost ratio for a general suicide education program is 7.13, where the peer support program yielded a positive 13.04 ratio.
