The purpose of this session is to discuss the importance of evaluating injury prevention programs. The Lewin Group (Lewin) has developed a systematic process for measuring performance, which can be applied to injury prevention programs. The process involves (1) the use of performance measurement tools to identify linkages between program activities/functions and outcomes/objectives; (2) determining a “universe” of potential measures and identifying data available to support these measures; (3) ensuring linkage of performance measures to strategic planning; (4) prioritizing and selecting the “vital few” measures that best tell the program’s “story”; (5) developing data collection plans; and (6) incorporating selected measures into grant guidance, budget and performance plans and conducting continuous monitoring and surveillance. Examples of the performance measurement process and sample performance measures will be taken from Lewin's project work focused on injury prevention programs and emergency medical services issues.
