Maricopa County Tobacco Use Prevention Program has been working with many local area hospitals to implement tobacco prevention, cessation and clean indoor air programs. MACTUPP partnered with major health care systems to secure locations to offer quit classes, increase referrals to quit classes, and raise awareness of the need for medical providers to counsel and refer patients to services. Partnering with major health care systems offered additional advantages. Hospitals are known geographical locations within communities making it easy for community members to be directed to the classes, operate during evening hours, provide free parking, have 24 hour on site security, and have good information infrastructures. To date every major medical surgical hospital in Maricopa County has entered into a partnership with MACTUPP. This partnership has resulted in a substantial cost saving to the program as all space, utilities, and services have been provided free of charge. They have also conducted campaigns to increase medical provider awareness of the programs as well as direct patients to cessation classes. Three hospitals have smokefree campuses. Results of program planning and implementation will be shared along with strategies to replicate this cost effective and efficacious program. This service is funded through the Arizona Department of Health Services.
