Community-based organizations in the not-for-profit sector are faced with a shortage of qualified younger staff both to provide smooth transitions when senior managers choose to leave and to perform the extraordinarily demanding functions of middle managers in today’s technologically sophisticated and regulatorily exacting human services environment. Public health professionals often time get into the field because they or a love one was affected by an illness or a disease. They are often full of passion, but lack the skills necessary to properly develop and implement health programs. The lack of resources in those small and medium size public health organizations make it critical that ways be found to improve the management skills of the managers. A unique form of community-academia partnership has been developed and implemented at the Latin American Health Institute. Community-Academia partnerships are joint ventures between community based organizations and academic institutions that provide for an exchange of goods, resulting in a benefit to the community beyond the value of the goods and services exchanged. In order to address these barriers and provide a useful program of formal training, LHI and Suffolk University through a Community based agency & Academia have developed a one-year, integrated learning and working Health & Human Services Management (HHSM) certificate program that will effectively begin to address the scarcity of qualified not-for-profit middle managers.
