This session will present information on medical providers' and hospitals' efforts and strategies to prevent perinatal transmission of HIV. Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center has developed and evaluated a range of strategies to reach practicing healthcare providers with current information on prevention of perinatal HIV transmission. Training strategies and materials that will increase provider knowledge and influence their practice will be discussed. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is promoting universal HIV testing with patient notification as a routine component of prenatal care. Through physicial surveys, ACOG has identified both provider and patient barriers to universal testing. In response, ACOG has developed professional educational materials to further eliminate physician barriers, patient materials to communicate the importance of early HIV screening, and is reviewing the issue of rapid testing at labor and delivery. The Health Research and Educational Trust is identifying ways to prevent perinatal HIV transmission at labor and delivery, especially using the new rapid screening technology. The session will present results from a survey of all US hospitals doing 300 or more births per year. The survey covers procedures for identifying pregnant women who are HIV positive during prenatal care as well as labor and delivery, for prevention of transmission during labor and delivery, for treatment of infants to prevent development of the disease, and for education and outreach.
