The purpose of this three-year federally funded project was to prepare advanced practice community/public health nurses for interdisciplinary leadership positions in governmental, managed care and community primary health care agencies. The primary goals were to improve the health status of the population of Arizona and to prepare advanced practice public health nurses who provide leadership to carry out the mission and functions of public health in state, tribal, and local health departments. The two major project objectives were to:

1. Offer an Interdisciplinary MS/MPH curriculum in collaboration with the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health. 2. Strengthen the Public Health Science Content in the current MS (CHN) Specialty area.

Grant highlights:

1. Finalized a curriculum plan that provides an expedited curriculum pathway for students who want and qualify for the Joint Interdisciplinary MS/MPH Option. 2. Strengthened the Public Health Science Content in the current MS (CHN) program. 3. Developed an aggressive outreach and marketing plan, which results in the recruitment and increased enrollment of students. 4. Convened an advisory Committee to provide input on recruitment, curriculum, Internship opportunities and other practice issues. 5. Developed and implemented a Monthly Public Health lecture Series (including national speakers) on timely public health topics. The Speaker Series is designed to enhance the visibility of public health and community health nursing and the role of nursing in this specialized area of practice.
