The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has funded five national organizations to develop lessons and tools to help providers--public health departments, physicians, hospitals, and others--prevent perinatal transmission of HIV. In this session, representatives of these organizations will discuss how they individually and collectively are working toward the goal of no HIV-positive infants born in the United States. The session will open with a brief description of trends in perinatal HIV transmission rates in the U.S., the medical and public health prevention strategies, and CDC-funded initiatives. The presentations will include discussion of use of the new rapid screening tests for HIV. In addition, each of the organizations and their areas of focus will be described.
