Maria E. Fernandez, PhD and Marilyn Hinojosa, MA. Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research, University of Texas Houston, 7000 Fannin, School of Public Health UCT 2558, Houston, TX 77030, 713/500-9626, mfernandez@sph.uth.tmc.edu

Latinos in a Network for Cancer Control [or LINCC], part of the National Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network, focuses on reducing cancer–related health disparities among Hispanics/Latinos through community-based interventions, replication, and dissemination research. Along the U.S.-Texas border where LINCC has focused its initial research efforts, Hispanics comprise roughly 80% of the populace and confront conditions of poverty and substandard living conditions within colonias, unincorporated communities. Conditions of environmental pollution, inadequate wastewater systems, and inadequate access to public drinking water in addition to inadequate service systems compound healthcare disparities among the residents.

LINCC members are currently conducting: 1) new research on factors influencing colorectal cancer screening among Hispanics and the development of a community-based intervention to increase colorectal cancer screening, 2) research on informed decision-making for prostate and colorectal cancer screening, 3) evidence review and new research on lay health worker (or promotora)-based interventions for increasing breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening, and 4) research on the effectiveness of small media interventions to increase cancer screening. Additionally, in collaboration with a major partner, the National Center for Farmworker Health, LINCC has begun replication and dissemination research activities utilizing Cultivando la Salud, an evidence-based, effective breast and cervical cancer screening intervention project originally developed for Hispanic women over 50 in farmworker areas. An oral presentation on the exciting work of this dynamic group of community members, researchers, cancer control specialists, and service providers will be presented.
