National Center on Physical Activity and Disability -- An Online Resource

William J. Schiller, PhD, National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD), University of Illinois at Chicago, 1640 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL 60608-6904, 312-413-1536, wjschill@uic.edu

The primary focus of the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) is to improve the health, wellness, and quality of life of people with disabilities and chronic health conditions by promoting and facilitating increased participation in physical activity and recreation. The operational activities of NCPAD are carried out by the University of Illinois at Chicago and its two primary collaborating partners, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) and National Center on Accessibility (NCA). Dissemination and participative consumer involvement activities are carried out in collaboration with four dissemination partners, the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL), Arc/US, United Cerebral Palsy, and the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD). Our four primary dissemination partners represent all major disability constituencies in the United States. They provide NCPAD with a highly credible and efficient connection to the disability community.

Taking advantage of current and anticipated advancements in information technology, the Center is developing and delivering an increasing number of products tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual user. We are also providing a greater variety of services designed to encourage participation in healthful physical activity and to support continued adherence to exercise programs. The Center is constantly expanding its existing database that presently includes more than 35,000 records related to physical activity and disability/chronic conditions, as well as maintaining and expanding its existing library of factsheets, monographs, exercise videos and other resources.
