One of Healthy People’s (HP2010) objectives is to increase the percent of US worksites (with 750 or more employees) that offer a comprehensive employee health promotion program from 50% in 1999 to 75% by 2010. Additionally, HP2010 targets 75% as the proportion of employees (an increase from 61% in 1994)who participate in employer sponsored wellness and health promotion programs. The purpose of this presentation is to share the procedures and results of a multiple method, triangulated approach of data collection utilized by a major southeastern employer to develop and implement their worksite health promotion program, “Steps to Wellness.” In order to adopt a comprehensive program planning model, data was collected from multiple stakeholders (i.e., employees, supervisors, managers, top administrators) through nominal groups, key informant interviews, paper-pencil survey, and health insurance claims analyses. Both the congruence and discord of findings from the four data sources and the methodological procedures for incorporating results into the program planning process will be presented. The presenter will also provide examples of successes and challenges encountered when assimilating needs assessment data into a pragmatic, cost-effective worksite health promotion program.
