Drugs, public health, and the environment: New directions at NIDA

This series of presentations will highlight the work of NIDA funded researchers who are integrating environmental influences into their study of drug abuse etiology, prevention, and treatment services. The initial presentation will describe NIDA’s Division of Epidemiology, Services, and Prevention Research and funding priorities with regard to drug abuse research in general and environmentally-focused research specifically. This presentation will also highlight NIDA initiatives of interest and provide information on innovative, currently funded projects that address key areas such as person-environment interactions and environmental approaches to prevention. This presentation will be followed by talks from prominent substance abuse researchers who have developed promising programs involving environmental aspects of drug abuse research. The presenters, Constance Weisner (University of California), Ed Smith (Pennsylvania State University), and Claire Sterk (Emory University), will describe examples and implications of their work. The session will conclude with audience involvement in a question and answer segment.
