Developing culturally & linguistically appropriate services among the Latino population

Thomas A. Siegmeth, MPH, CHES and Zoila Escobar, VP. Health Education Department, AltaMed Health Services Corporation, 500 Citadel Drive, Suite 490, Los Angeles, CA 90040, 323-889-7397, tsiegmeth@altamed.org

Cultural & linguistic barriers have become increasing difficult to address as community health centers needs have increased including the implementation of programs that reach multi-ethnic communities. Community health centers face the challenge to providing mulifaceted care as funding decreases with additional healthcare mandates. It has become essential to implement cost effective strategies in developing culturally & linguistically appropriate programs in order to create effective programs as well as comply with health plan & CLAS standard mandates.

AltaMed Health Services is dedicated to serving individuals and families, across all generations, through its primary healthcare services as well as long-term care and geriatric programs throughout the Greater Los Angeles region. Propelled by the belief that quality health care is a basic human right, AltaMed continues to develop and expand culturally & linguistically appropriate programs. Drawing from over 35 years of experience working among the Latino population, AltaMed continues to refine programs addressing the National Standards for Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health Care.
