The UNESCO Chair in Visual Health and Development works so that the most disadvantaged in developing countries have access to appropriate vision care through research, education, and development projects of cooperation.

The Observatory of the Visual Health in Latin America of the UNESCO Chair in Visual Health and Development developed a protocol to create a databank on the vision care situation in Central America and the aspects related to its improvement.

The protocol includes an analysis of the social, political, and cultural development indicators for each country, as well as the environmental and economic situation and includes aspects directly related to visual health. The presentation will indicate the contents of the protocol of study.

With respect to visual health, the human and material ophthalmic resources of each country will be analyzed. A review of the existing visual health professionals will be included. A history of the professions, regulation and legislation of the professions and any relevant educational programs and professional associations will be mention. Access to ophthalmic equipment and materials will be reviewed as well.

The results of such a report will assist key players in development cooperation and visual health to determine priority lines of action for the region.
