Precilla Lorene Belin, PhD, MA, CHES, Public Health Program, Morgan State University, Jenkins Bldg. 343, 1700 East Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251, 443-885-4144, pbelin@jewel.morgan.edu and Lloyd Stanton, Community Building in Partnership, Inc., 1114 Mount Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.

According to Healthy People 2010, community-based programs must ensure that individuals have not just the knowledge but also the attitudes and skills needed for optimal health. More importantly, the programs must be those that can be planned and implemented by members of the community, with attention given to sustainability. Also, one of the major priorities highlights the need for strong, cohesive, and integrated educational and community-based programs for racial and ethnic minorities. Healthy People 2010 emphasizes the use of interventions specifically designed to meet the age, developmental levels, cultural, and other learning needs of diverse target audiences. Overall, there is a need to increase partnerships between planned community health promotion programs and community organizations. Therefore, this presentation will highlight the process of creating an effective community-based project and the components of an effective community-based project. Also, this presentation will discuss partnerships and the application of community-based participatory research principles to assist in creating sustainability for an effective community-based project. Lastly, this presentation will provide two examples of effective community-based projects, designed by the presenter and the community, with an emphasis in sustainability. Each project included a planning and development phase, an implementation phase, an evaluation phase, and a dissemination phase.
