The Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) is a Maryland state commission charged with establishing the rates that the state’s acute care hospitals may charge its patients. As such, it is the only rate-setting agency remaining in the United States. In response to the growing interest in the types and scope of community benefit services Maryland’s hospitals provide, the legislature asked HSCRC to collect hospital community benefit information from individual hospitals to compile into a publicly available statewide Community Benefit Report which will include general summary information. The first report is scheduled to be distributed in spring of 2005. Ms. Shearer will discuss some of the key questions that have come up in defining, collecting, and summarizing the data for this first statewide Community Benefit Report.
