The Healthy Public Housing Initiative is in its third year as a project. One of the key steps during this year is to draw lessons about the work we have done and to develop out of those lessons a series of policy recommendations. The project has divided into four sub-committees each with a different policy focus. These are: 1) Operations and maintenance, 2) Resident empowerment, 3) Capital planning and funding, 4) Health. The operations and maintenance group is developing recommendations for the local housing authority about implementing an integrated pest management program. The resident empowerment group is developing a program to hire residents into jobs assisting with pest management and energy conservation. The capital planning and funding group is working on energy performance contracts, energy conservation and “health specs” for newly built public housing. The health group is focusing on health care for asthmatic children and the health impacts of physical and interpersonal interventions. This talk will present an overview of the outcomes from all four groups, with a more detailed exploration of the resident job program.
