Foot disorders associated with mental status changes in the older patient - a barometer of physical impairment

Purpose: To provide an approach for professional assessment and risk stratification to identify foot problems in older patients, with mental status change. Method: The presentation outlines assessment protocols and risk stratification principles as well as identifying the primary complications associated changes in older patient with mental status and cognitive changes. Included, are program outlines for early assessment and preventive strategies. Elements of health promotion, education, the measurable outcomes of immobility, cogitative impairment, dementia, depression, behavioral and disruptive behaviors, and agitation will be related to the burden of illness. The presentation will focus on implementation, monitoring, reassessment, and the relationship to risk, limitation of activity, and methods enhance independent living and the quality of life. Results: This program summarizes a twelve-year consulting program at Temple University, School of Podiatric Medicine in cooperation with Wills Eye Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to develop a standard podogeriatric assessment protocol in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, to help reduce complications and provide guidelines for foot care for older patients.
