Malaysian Export Promotion Council

The Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council functions to highlight the qualitative advantages of Malaysian rubber products. It serves as a center to disseminate accurate information and to improve understanding of the technical and environmental merits of Malaysia' rubber products. Its Washington D.C. Office works closely with standard and regulatory authorities such as the American Society for Testing and Materials and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration while providing liaison with other governmental organizations, trade and consumer bodies as well as public interest groups in the U.S.

As the largest medical glove exporter to the United States, Malaysia is concerned not only with product quality, but also user's safety. For example, the intensive research and development efforts by Malaysia in addressing the latex protein allergy problem in recent years have led to the formulation of the Standard Malaysian Glove (SMG) program, that provides users with high quality low-protein lightly powdered and powder-free latex examination gloves, which are not only very effective in barrier protection against viral transmission and infectious diseases but also of low risk to allergy. Only glove manufacturers who meet all stringent SMG technical specifications are certified. The SMG certification is therefore a technically graded and quality assurance program.

Hospital studies have shown that the use of low-protein latex gloves vastly reduces the incidence of latex sensitization and allergic reactions. They also demonstrate that latex allergic individuals donning synthetic gloves could now work along side their co-workers who wear the low-protein latex gloves, and suffer no ill effects. ECRI, a non-profit health services research organization and the world's largest independent evaluator of biomedical equipment, recommends the use of low-protein latex gloves with protein labeling or those that bear the SMG seal, particularly the powder-free variety (Health Devices May 2004).
