This session describes the influences of several different types of social factors on health. Presenters will describe social factors such as Social Capital, Social ties, income, unemployment, and health care expenditures and their relation to health outcomes. Environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, access to parks and neighborhood sidewalks, and air quality will also be related to health outcomes. Some of the outcomes of interest are Mental health, Physical fitness, diabetes and death. | |||
Learning Objectives: After attending this session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe examples of community members improving their local environments in ways that have made it easier for residents to be physically active 2. Discuss the value of social capital in improving mental 3. Describe the associations between health behaviors, health outcomes, and environmental features and the implications of these associations for public health policy. 4. Identify the social, economic and/or environmental factors which contribute to different mortality patterns across the three cities over time. | |||
