This session describes collaborative efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality due to exposure to hazardous substances. Several presentations will highlight results of surveillance for the occurrance of hazardous materials spills and releases, including the distribution and type of hazardous materials releases and the morbity and mortality associated with them. Other presentations will focus on investigations of exposures to hazardous materials that occurred as prolonged low level exposures associated with hazardous waste sites. Combining the information from these sessions will provide an excellent overview of the potential exposures and health effects associated with hazardous wastes.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) Describe the distribution and characteristics of Hazmat releases 2) Highlight the factors associated with HazMat events involving death and/or mass casualty 3) Compare adverse health effects in these events occurring in rural/agricultural and all other areas in terms of morbidity and mortality.
