APHA Opening General Session
The Opening General Session at this year’s meeting will have an exciting new format. It will include addresses by a number of exciting and challenging speakers who will welcome us and present their comment on the present and future course of public health. During the course of the Session, meeting attendees will also have the opportunity to pay tribute to three distinguished individuals who will receive APHA’s legislative and governmental awards: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA)and Governor John Baldacci of Maine. All three individuals are being honored for their strong commitment to public health and their efforts to assure access to care for all Americans. At the same ceremony, Diana Bonta, DrPH, RN, who is the Director of the California Department of Health Services, will receive the 2003 Presidential Award. Dr. Bonta is a former chair of the APHA’s Executive Board, who has distinguished herself as a national public health leader and creative innovator. The keynote speaker for the Session is David Heymand, MD, MPH, former Executive Director for Communicable Diseases at the World Health Organization. Dr. Heymannd had a very key role in WHO’s efforts to control the global SARS epidemic. His keynote address will deal with that epidemic and on the global threat of emerging infections. Our President, Jay Glasser, PhD, MS, will give his Presidential Address during the course of the Opening Session. He will look to the future to address the numerous challenges facing public health in the 21st century.
