Healthier Children and Youths - Improving Nutrition and Increasing Physical Activity in School-Aged Children
HealthierChildren and Youths, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Departments of Education, Agriculture and Health and Human Services, was signed in June 2002 by the three departmental Secretaries as a part of President Bush’s HealthierUS Initiative. The departments are working together to encourage all young people to adopt healthy eating habits, increase their levels of physical activity, and make healthier choices. This session will highlight: the vision and progress to date of this collaborative partnership, specific examples of how existing programs can be expanded by collaboration to create synergy as well as a public-private partnership, Action For Healthy Kids, which was launched at the Healthy Schools Summit in October 2002 and has led to working state teams throughout the country.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session participants will: 1. Increase their awareness about the HealthierChildren and Youths Memorandum of Understanding and related Federal as well as private collaborative efforts focusing on increasing physical activity and healthy eating in schools. 2. Increase their awareness about the benefits to students and those working within the schools of a healthy environment. 3. List the components of a collaborative school health program. 4. Learn about tangible ways to mobilize their schools through effective, easy to implement programs and collaborative partnerships. 5. Increase their awareness of available resources to create a healthier school environment.
