| Trauma is a significant problem in many countries, and a substantial literature exists which implicates alcohol as a major risk factor in this regard; however, findings from studies in emergency room (ER) samples suggest considerable variation in alcohol’s association with injury. While much of this variation may be due to individual-level variables, contextual variables related to socio-cultural factors in a particular society and organizational variables related to specific ER sites have not been incorporated into analytic models. This session will present analysis of data from the Emergency Room Collaborative Alcohol Analysis Project (ERCAAP), which includes ER data collected between 1984 and 2002 on alcohol and injury in studies of over 20,000 patients from 31 ER sites covering seven countries (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and the U.S.), all of which used similar data collection instruments and methodology. Various analytic strategies which take contextual variables into consideration will be presented to examine relationships of alcohol to injury and medical problems. The primary goal of these analyses is to expand the explanatory model of the role of alcohol in injuries and medical problems observed in emergency rooms, and will inform intervention and prevention strategies for reducing alcohol-related harm. | |||
