Some immigrant populations have experienced elevated rates of victimization by torture, war trauma, domestic violence, as well as other forms of violence. Violence may impact the future physical, psychological, and social well-being of its survivors. This session examines the health consequences of violence for diverse refugee and immigrant populations, as well as individual and institutional strategies for coping with the health effects of violence.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1) discuss the impact of violence on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of refugee and immigrant populations; 2) identify the mechanisms linking violence and subsequent health outcomes among violence survivors; 3) evaluate coping strategies and interventions that can reduce the consequences of violence on the health of its survivors.
