In this presentation new paradigms will be described for the development of culturally-appropriate cardiovascular disease interventions for Latinas. These new paradigms will include innovative outreach and community-based models that use a set of culturally rich dimensions and new theoretical frameworks for program design, implementation and evaluation. Empirical data from two community outreach models of the Salud Para Su Corazon (Health For Your Heart) National Dissemination Initiative using lay health educators will be reported. Data comes from two models. The North Texas Enhanced Dissemination and Utilization Center in Fort Worth Texas and from 7 Latino communities of the National Initiative with an overall sample size of more than 300 Latinas and their families. Findings from paired t-test and other statistical analyses demonstrated that for both programs there was a statistically significant increase in the average sum scores and for each one of the heart healthy areas surveyed (e.g. salt and sodium, cholesterol, fat, physical activity, etc.) These results indicate that the lay health educators’ programs of Salud Para Su Corazon have a positive effect in helping Latinas make heart healthy behavior changes to improve their health.
