Abstract #74316

Testing for causality between socioeconomic status and health

Daniel McFadden, PhD, Economics, University of California, Berkeley, 549 Evans Hall #3880, Berkeley, CA 94720-3880, 510-643-8428, mcfadden@econ.berkeley.edu

There is a large and growing literature on the relationship between individuals' socioeconomic status and their health. The earlier literature suggested the existence of a strong relationship, but more recent research has cast some doubt on that conclusion. This paper discusses issues pertaining to testing for the existence of a genuine causal relationship between SES and health. Prof. McFadden was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in the year 2000.
