Reauthorization of 2003 was a pivotal year for the Child Nutrition Programs as Congress addressed issues that affected health outcomes of children as well as advanced the goals of No Child Left Behind. 4.7 billion lunches are served nationwide during a school year to children in the National School Lunch Program alone and over half of those students qualifying for free or reduced-priced meals. Reauthorization of 2003 was an important time to address children’s access to all Child Nutrition Programs, program integrity and the role school foodservice plays in developing healthy children. This presentation will recap the progress made to the Child Nutrition Programs as a result of the 2003 reauthorization. In addition, current legislative trends and issues as they relate to the future of the Child Nutrition Programs, children’s health and well being, and nutrition education will be addressed.
