Abstract #74032

Using the NBDPS to Study Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) occurs in about 70% of pregnant women, yet its association with birth outcomes is not clear. There is no standard of care for NVP in the US and the effects of drug treatments for NVP on birth defects are uncertain. In addition, NVP may be linked to reduced intake and retention of multivitamins, an important part of prenatal care and birth defects prevention. Methods: This presentation will describe three NVP-related studies that are underway utilizing data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS). The first study examines the relationship of first trimester drug treatment with risk of certain birth defects. The second study employs the population-based cohort of normal controls to evaluate the relationship between NVP and infant size at birth. The third study assesses whether periconceptional multivitamin intake modifies relationships between NVP and birth outcomes. In particular, given that multivitamins have been independently associated with NVP, birth defects, and birth weight, multivitamin exposure may influence observed associations between NVP and these birth outcomes. Results: Preliminary results will be presented. Discussion: Given the ubiquitous nature of NVP, it is surprising that this condition has not been studied more extensively. Since the NBDPS collects data on NVP, medication and supplement use before and during pregnancy and birth outcomes, it offers a unique opportunity to research unresolved questions related to this common condition.
