Healthy Vision 2010: Resources

John A. Shoemaker, Eye Health Communications, 1610 East Geneva Road, Wheaton, IL 60187, 630-871-9250, shoemakerj@earthlink.net

The National Eye Institute, one of the National Institutes of Health, provides several resources that are essential for anyone seeking to implement the vision-related objectives in Healthy People 2010 for their community. The resources include Healthy Vision 2010, a companion document to accompany focus area 28 of Healthy People 2010. Each chapter of the document provides an expanded discussion of the vision problem addressed by a specific objective, including a review of the epidemiology of the problem, the apparent gaps and unmet needs related to the problem, and recommended activities to address those needs. Another helpful resource is the Healthy Vision 2010 Toolkit. The toolkit consists of a community action guide and ten handbooks, one for each of the ten vision objectives. The community action guide includes tips for community organizers, media guide, speaker's guide, and slide presentation. Each handbook provides more focused eye health information and promotion activities for a specific vision objective such as a fact sheet, drop-in article, radio and print public service announcements (PSAs), a pull-out brochure, and other materials. Resources are also available to support Healthy Vision Month, an annual media campaign that promotes a different vision objective each year. The National Eye Institute also provides funding for community-based eye health education and promotion programs through its new Healthy Vision 2010 Community Awards program. Additional information about all the resources can be found at the Heatlhy Vision 2010 web site.
