Purpose: In order to provide a basis for future legislative support to institutionalize, expand, and sustain asthma control in California, it was necessary to 1) create a partnership of governmental, community-based, and commercial agencies/organizations whose missions embrace asthma control programs and services; 2) create a State strategic plan with goals, objectives, and strategies that constitute the best futuring for asthma control in California; and 3) to employ modern technology to track, capture, and portray implementation of the Strategic Plan for Asthma in California. We will illustrate tracking the Plan with a realtime demonstration of the electronic surveying technology and website reporting. Methods: We developed a (relational and exportable) consumer relations database and internet website as the engine for tracking implementation as well as facilitating communications between asthma partner agencies and organizations, used tiered and waved electronic surveys to capture data, and developed a contingency workforce of senior citizens, graduate students, and members of the disabled community to contact partners where technology was unavailable or burdensome. Results: Data will be collected between March and September 2003 There are more than 400 partners in the California database reporting activities specifically linked to the goals and stratigies of the Plan. Conclusions: Using computer telecommunications technology and comsumer relations software with internet connectivity, the project is able to economically and efficiently track the implementation for the Plan, analyze the results for olanning and management purposes, and protray the totality for gaining sustaining funding.
