In this session on "The Politics of War & Health," the Spirit of 1848 Caucus integrates the 3 themes of our Caucus. These pertain to the inextricable links between social justice & public health, as embodied in: the politics of public health data, the social history of public health, and progressive pedagogy.

Barry S. Levy and Victor M. Sidel will give an historically-grounded perspective on "Social Justices caused by war and their impact on public health."

Richard Garfield will discuss "The Epidemiology of Collective Violence."

James Quesada will present on "Teaching about war, violence, and health," focusing on the long-lingering impacts of war.

Linde Rae Murray will serve as discussant, providing a critical perspective on the signifcance of the politics of war & health to those of us in public health.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to:
• Articulate connections between issues of social justice & public health in relation to the politics of war & health;
• Articulate connections between the politics of public health data, the social history of public health, and progressive pedagogy, in relation to the politics of war & health.
