In the current international climate of rapidly changing technology and technology-based education, research struggles to keep pace in providing answers to questions of relevancy, progress, efficiency, effectiveness, and outcome of web-based education. This particular nursing education context at the University of Calgary includes the post-diploma nursing student, the theory-practice dimensions of public/community health nursing, and the community-as-partner perspective, thereby adding to the complexity of the teaching and learning situation in web-based education. The current research study sought to explore the effectiveness of web-based public/community health nursing education by examining student and faculty perspectives and achievement outcomes. Given the paucity of research in the area, an exploratory descriptive approach using qualitative and quantitative strategies and multiple measures was deemed appropriate for baseline evaluative research. Data collection involved both post-diploma student and faculty samples and occurred over two academic terms of theory and clinical courses in public health nursing. During this phase, various data collection strategies, including journalling, email probes, phone interviews, course communications, and grading records, were used to elicit both formative and summative evaluative feedback. Data analysis took place concurrently with data collection and included thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. This presentation will discuss significant findings and implications for web-based teaching and learning, evaluation, and public/community health nursing education, as well as possible directions for future educational and research initiatives.
