The University of Northern Iowa Global Health Corps

Recent global crises have caused a high influx of refugees and immigrants coming into the United States of America. While these new arrivals may get medical attention on an individual basis, a better grasp of their overall health status and needs is increasingly critical for the benefit of these populations in particular, and for the benefit of public health strategic planning in general. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to describe how the University of Northern Iowa's Global Health Corps has and is collaborating with local health departments and other organizations to better meet the health needs of refugees and immigrants in the local community.

The University of Northern Iowa's Global Health Corps is headquatered in Cedar Falls which is a small town in rural North-East Iowa. GHC is involved in multi- faceted health promotion programs and research. One on-going project deals with The health assessment of refugees and immigrants while another focuses on implementing health promotion programs for those same groups. Health promotion programs and the collection of data are conducted by undergraduate and graduate students trained by expert professors and facilitated by local health administrators.

As a result of Global Health Corps activities, local health departments are able to implement culturally appropriate health programs that benefit both covered populations and host populations. Students participating in those programs also benefit tremendously by having first hand research and field experience along with high awareness and exposure to global health issues.
