The Latino Healthcare Professionals Project (LHPP) was initiated in 1995 at California State Univesity Long Beach to ameliorate the lack of Latinos in health care management. Each year, 20 bilingual, bicultural, first-generation educated students are accepted into the program. Students receive a full-tuition and partial book scholarship and engage in health care management training over a two-year period. Participants also conduct a customized internship in health management. Eight years after its inception, the project is demonstrating its effectiveness as over 75% of its graduates are working in health care and 50% are attending or have finished graduate degrees in health and human services. Data regarding the evaluation component will be presented in an effort to demonstrate the effectiveness of diversity training programs in health management. The program design, recruitment, and retention methods will also be discussed.
