The goal of Families in Good Health is to promote physical activity and healthy eating among the Cambodian, Lao, and Hmong communities of Long Beach, California. As a partner with the Palos Verdes Shelf Outreach and Education Pilot Project, Families in Good Health engaged in a community based risk communication effort with these communities. With a pilot project grant, Families in Good Health developed a half-hour Cambodian-language fish contamination video that was shown on local cable television. Five hundred copies of the video were produced and are being shown and distributed, along with posters, in local markets in Long Beach. Families in Good Health also developed a flyer in Cambodian that is being distributed at health fairs and to pier fishers. Based on the successful completion of the pilot project, Families in Good Health was awarded a full project grant and is currently using the multi-agency curriculum to conduct further health education within the Cambodian community.
