The California Endowment has created a grantmaking program aimed at preventing Type 2 diabetes through prevention of childhood overweight and the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity. The Endowment aims to uncover and address the disparities that leave some segments of the California population at enormous risk for poor nutrition and inadequate physical activity. Historically, methods to reduce obesity have focused on a traditional medical model of individual behavior modification and treatment. In order to address health disparities and the larger social and environmental factors that influence them, The Endowment will focus on funding efforts to improve the nutrition and physical activity environments of those most at risk. Special attention will be given to finding public policy solutions to obesity prevention. This presentation will describe The Endowment’s current obesity prevention activities including identification and collection of existing childhood obesity-related data; formative research to identify the highest priority issues, the geographic areas and populations with the greatest need, and the most promising and innovative strategies to support; and grants made to provide support for California’s leading nutrition and physical activity organizations in order to continue to build momentum in this field and broaden the reach of funded programs.
