This presentation will focus on a special educational program in a sensitive area between women with disabilities and their direct caretaker. Statement of Problem As a result of a federal managed care funding distribution initiative to care for people at home, many people with disabilities get allowances that cover health attendants such as caretakers in their homes. The following problems were observed: 1. Interpersonal tension between the caretgivers (who are most often women too) and the women with disabilities. These tensions are often the result of a lack of understanding about a specific disability, or disabilities in general. They often create personality conflicts and fear on both sides. 2. Poor understanding of the physical needs of how to care for these women - especially how to transfer them from bed to wheelchair and back. 3. Poor home environment that does not allow the caretaker to function as best they can to help women Learning objectives: 1. Learner will acquire tools to teach women with disabilities and their caregivers to negotiate optimum care 2. Participants will develop an appreciation of the delicate relationship that exists between women with disabilities and their caregivers 3. Participants will be introduced and recognize a model of care promoting a healthy life style for women with disabilities 4. Participants will develop conflict resolution skills to improve relationships between women with disabilities and their caregivers.
