The Hopkins Center for the Prevention of Youth Violence was created in October 2000 with a five-year grant from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Based on the theme, Science Informing Practice, Practice Questioning Science, the Center brings together academic institutions, City and State agencies and organizations, community groups, schools, youth groups, and faith organizations to collaborate on both positive youth development and the prevention of violence. The Center provides a formal infrastructure that facilitates academic-community collaborations by integrating research findings with education and training, professional development, and practice efforts, translating research into improved professional practice. The result is an increase in the capacity of local providers, policy makers, and academic researchers to choose among potential interventions, monitor fidelity to specified standards, and increase knowledge concerning effective and ineffective practices and policies.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to:
• To discuss ways to develop the activities of these academic centers on youth violence designed to help centers learn from communities and help address needs, and for communities to gain from center resources and expertise.
• To discuss activities, mechanisms and approaches academic centers use in developing community partnerships to address violence.
