Geoffery M Calvert, MD, MPH1, Walter Alarcon, MD1, Chris Geiser, PhD2, Patrice Sutton, MPH2, Marylou Verder-Carlos, DVM, MPVM3, Theresa Brevard, MD1, R Das, MD, MPH2, Laura Ellerbe, MS2, Ximena Vergara2, John Beckman2, and Robert Harrison, MD, MPH2. (1) NIOSH/CDC, CDC-NIOSH, 4676 Columbia Parkway, R-21, Cincinnati, OH 45220, (2) Occupational Health Branch, California Department of Health Services, 1515 Clay Street, Suite 1901, Oakland, CA 94612, (3) Pesticide Illness Surveillance Program, California Department of Health Services, PO Box 4015, Sacramento, CA 95812

This is an abstract for a 90 minute session. The moderator (Geoff Calvert) will give a 5 minute introduction, and each speaker will be given 15 minutes. Presentation summaries are provided. 1) Illnesses associated with insecticides used for mosquito control - Walter Alarcon. Illnesses associated with mosquito control efforts in the US during 1999-2002 will be described. Prevention recommendations will be provided. 2) Cholinesterase as a biomarker for occupational pesticide illness: interview data from laboratory reporting- Chris Geiser, Das R, Ellerbe L. A pilot program in California using cholinesterase test results to improve pesticide poisoning reporting will be described. Recommendations on how this program can prevent occupational pesticide poisoning will be provided. 3) Hazards associated with aircraft disinsection - Patrice Sutton, Vergara X, Das R, Beckman J, Harrison R. Due to disease-carrying insects boarding aircraft in tropical countries, some countries require disinsection of aircraft serving these tropical regions. The risks associated with disinsection, and prevention recommendations will be provided. 4) Illnesses associated with a sprinkler application of metam sodium-California, 1999 - Marylou Verder-Carlos. An event involving an illegal metam sodium application that was associated with illnesses among nearby neighborhood residents will be described. It will highlight one of the risks of suburbia’s encroachment upon farmland. 5) Acute occupational disinfectant poisoning among youth - Theresa Brevard. Using Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS), and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) data collected between 1993-1998, 307 youth were identified with occupational disinfectant poisoning. The relative risk for illness among youth compared to working adults was 4.14 (95% CI=3.66,4.68).
