The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure resistance self-efficacy construct in Betel Nut chewing behavior, and to examine the psychometric properties of the Resistance Self-efficacy in Betel Nut Chewing Questionnaire (RSEBNCQ). The preliminary work consisted of a focus group, a panel of experts, and pilot testing of the RSBNCQ scale was done to establish reliability and validity of the instruments. Based on the data from the 7 volunteers in a focus group, the researchers developed the items of the RSBNCQ for use with adults. The content validity index across 9 experts from different health field was 0.93. 10 volunteers were asked to examine the face validity. None of them had difficulty understanding the meanings of any item. Administration of the RSEBNCQ to 31 adults was conducted to assess the feasibility of the RSEBNCQ. A random cluster sampling and proportion sampling were used in this study. A sample of 220 adults was recruited from Chia-I. Principle component factor analysis procedure was applied to determine the construct validity of the RSEBNCQ scale. One component labeled resistance self-efficacy in betel nut chewing accounted for 83.43% of total variance. The item loading for each item ranged from 0.74 to 0.94. The item-total correlation ranged above 0.74. Furthermore, the alpha and the test-retest reliability coefficients for the RSEBNCQ scale was 0.97 and 0.87, respectively. The study findings provided the evidence of validity and reliability of the RSEBNCQ instrument in studies of betel nut chewing behavior among adults in Chia-I area.
