The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing is the only nursing program in the Returned Peace Corps Fellows Program (RPCVs). We began the Fellows USA program in 1991 with a community outreach volunteer option for selected students completing baccalaureate nursing education after Peace Corps. The Fellows program is now part of an extensive formal School of Nursing Community Outreach Program. After twelve years, several outcomes have been achieved. 1.) A strong partnership exists with Peace Corps Fellows/ USA Domestic Programs, focusing on advancing the 3rd goal, to “bring the world back home.” Annually there are approximately 25 Fellows bringing international experiences back home to the U.S. and into nursing careers. 2.) Students’ advanced community outreach service-learning has lead to significant contributions to the underserved communities in Baltimore. The outcomes of what students have produced will be illustrated, including summaries of student research and service projects. 3.) As a result of the Community Outreach and Fellows programs, students are in public health nursing careers or advanced practice primary care. Preliminary results indicate these nurses are now in leadership roles as well. An analysis of Fellows and students who worked in the Community Outreach Program from 1995 – 2002 will be presented.
