The rapid incursion of the pharmaceutical industry into sex research and professional education in the 1990s has resulted in increasing acceptance of the overly-medicalized concept of "Female Sexual Dysfunction." This presentation will explore the pitfalls of adopting this narrow view of women's sexual problems and the drug industry's advocacy of a "magic bullet" approach with expensive drugs and devices as first-line solutions. It will also highlight the NEW VIEW CAMPAIGN, initially spear-headed by psychologist Leonore Tiefer, as a model educational campaign for alerting women to the dangers of reducing female sexuality to genital functioning.
The session will challenge myths promoted by the pharmaceutical industry, reinforce the importance of good sexuality education in promoting healthy sexual relationships, and advocate for integrity guidelines for sex researchers working with and for the pharmaceutical industry.
