Abstract #68701

Increasing Access and Participation in Cancer Clinical Trials Across the United States

Gary L. Gurian, MS Public Admin and Emilie M. Tierney. Public and Governmental Affairs, Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups, 1818 Market Street, Suite 1100, Philadelphia, PA 19103

Approximately 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States this year. Only 40,000 will enroll in cancer trials and receive the benefit of treatment research. According to a recent Harris survey 85 percent of cancer patients were unaware of clinical trials as a treatment option. In 2000 cancer cost the United States an estimated $180.2 billion. The vision of the Coalition of National Cancer Cooperative Groups is to be the leader in improving the survival and quality of life of cancer patients by increasing knowledge, access, and participation in clinical trials.

TrialCheck is a unique Web-based cancer clinical trial screening tool that lets the user quickly and easily identify trials that may be appropriate. TrialCheck contains hundreds of cooperative group cancer clinical trials and is incorporating IND (investigational new drug) approved industry trials. After as few as five screening questions are answered, TrialCheck provides a list of trials, trial summaries, and locations where trials are available. TrialCheck is customized for use by oncology professionals or the public. The public version of TrialCheck is launching Spring 2003. One of the most important things to a cancer patient is time. TrialCheck provides quick and easy access to cancer clinical trial information that allows patients, oncology professionals, patient advocates, and others the opportunity to take advantage of receiving tomorrow’s treatments today through participation in clinical trials.
