Abstract #68152

Designing and implementing an effective tobacco counter-marketing campaign

Linda A. Block, MPH and Karen Gutierrez, BA. Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Hwy, NE, Mailstop K-50, Atlanta, GA 30341, 770-488-5476, LBlock@cdc.gov

This session is designed for tobacco control program staff who are responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a media campaign to reduce tobacco use or exposure to secondhand smoke. It will also be of interest to others who use media to address other public health topics.

The introduction of this 90-minute session will describe the newly released CDC manual, "Designing and Implementing an Effective Tobacco Counter-Marketing Program," a comprehensive 400-page document that was designed based on what has worked successfully in tobacco control and prevention media campaigns over the last ten or more years since the first state media campaigns began. It is a comprehensive resource that takes tobacco control media campaign managers through the process of developing and implementing their tobacco counter-marketing campaigns, to help ensure that programs are as effective as possible and gain from the past experiences of others. The manual also includes many examples of how state health departments and organizations have developed successful campaigns, as well as samples of key documents used throughout the process. Participants will be given their own copy of the manual to take with them.

The four other presentations during this 90-minute will focus on four chapters of the manual: planning your counter-marketing program, reaching specific populations, evaluating the success of your counter-marketing program, and media advocacy.
