Cancer is one of the Healthy People 2010 focus areas. Each Healthy People 2010 mortality and screening objective has a target to be achieved by the year 2010. Data will be collected to measure and monitor progress throughout the decade. Based on the most current data, the cancer mortality objectives were assessed for target attainment using the estimated annual percent change statistic. Mortality projections were made to 2010. Variations in mortality target attainment by 2010 among population groups were evident. Current tracking data show, screening use overall has increased. Although, some of the population groups have attained the target for mammography, no population group has met the 2010 target for cervical and colorectal cancer screening. If trends remain unchanged, current estimated annual percent changes suggest that disparities will persist and some population groups will not attain the 2010 target. Recent changes in the classification of cancer mortality statistics will be discussed and suggestions will be made on use of the comparability ratio in trend analysis.
