Patricia Heyn, PhD and Beatriz Abreu, PhD, FAOTA. Division of Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Boulevard, Galveston, TX 77555, (409) 797-1458, paheyn@utmb.edu

The purpose of this innovative program is to develop and assess the feasibility of a physical activity program based on virtual reality technology for older adults with cognitive impairments living in a residential rehabilitation center for brain injury. The program will focus on promoting physical activity and physical functioning through a semi-immersive and interactive virtual environment. The reason to combine virtual reality (VR) with physical activity for cognitively impaired older persons is to integrate wellness and functioning, to maximize the environment where the individual is functioning as well the person’s potential. The goal of this program is: 1) to test the feasibility of VR environments as a resource to enhance health and physical activity in the brain injured older adult, 2) to create an attractive and simulative environment for the institutionalized elderly, and 3) to increase their levels of physical functioning by moving and performing in a rich environment. Successful implementation of VR in physical and functional training may offer a new approach to the functional rehabilitation of elderly. Virtual reality may become a useful tool in rehabilitation and geriatric units as well as nursing homes. This project will assist in establishing the usefulness of VR in the physical training of older adults that are faced with the physical and psychological barriers due to the cognitive impairment. Project development and outcomes will be discussed
