“The Partnership for the Public’s health funds local health departments and community groups in their service areas to work together to develop their capacities to do community-based public health work, and specifically, to name community-selected health improvement priorities and then design and implement strategies to address them, including identifying relevant policy and systems changes necessary to accomplish their goals. In one Los Angeles County partnerships, a unique approach to building capacity at the grassroots level to accomplish these tasks has been developed. The Lennox Neighborhood College recognizes the unique characteristics of its community and uses its specific knowledge of community assets and needs to mobilize residents to act to improve community health.
Three levels of training were offered, each with a different intensity level, to meet varied needs. The first level, and the one with the most intensive training, was geared towards those residents with a history of doing community work. The second level was targeted to residents with an interest but not much prior experience in community work. The last tier of was focused on the community at large and involved informational forums on topics that were relevant to community needs. The Neighborhood College was created in this format to provide training at a level appropriate to the target audience for each tier. This presentation will describe the needs assessment process used to create the College, give an overview of the curriculum of each level, and discuss the teaching styles necessary for each level of the Neighborhood College.
